Pilates for Horses

Core stability, strength and suppleness are important to horses just as much as the rider. There are exercises that can help to maintain stability posture and balance and in turn contribute to more effective training, increased performance and a decreased risk of injury.



Why perform Pilates?

Stimulation and strengthening the core muscles of the horse can help to build a stronger back and assist in carrying the weight of a rider. Core strengthening can be a valuable part of rehabilitation programme following injury.

  • Aims to flex the back

  • Strengthening the muscles and structures involved in engagement and carrying the weight of the wider

  • Stimulation of the sacroiliac area

Walking over raised poles

  • Aims to flex the back and joints in the limbs

  • Strengthening the muscles and structures involved in engagement, hip flexion and pelvic stability

  • Involvement of suppleness and flexibility

Baited stretches

  • Aims to stimulate and strengthen core muscles and help to flex the back

  • Improves range of motion of the neck and back
